Safe Return of Over 200 Fleeing Citizens: Indian Army Praised for Myanmar Border Operation
"NEW DELHI: Over 200 Indian citizens who had crossed the
Myanmar border from Manipur due to ethnic violence in the northeastern state have safely returned. Manipur's Chief Minister, Biren Singh, expressed gratitude towards the Indian Army for ensuring their safe return."Relief and appreciation as 212 Indian citizens (all Meiteis) who sought refuge across the Myanmar border following the unrest in Moreh town of Manipur since May 3 have been successfully brought back to Indian territory," stated Chief Minister Biren Singh. He praised the Indian Army for their dedicated efforts in repatriating them and extended his thanks to GOC Eastern Command, Lt Gen. RP Kalita, GOC 3 Corp, Lt Gen. HS Sahi, and CO of 5 AR, Col. Rahul Jain for their unwavering service.
Earlier during Sadbhavana Diwas, Biren Singh emphasized the crucial need for restoring peace and normalcy in the strife-torn state. He urged people to set aside personal interests and prioritize collective well-being. "Our foremost goal now is reestablishing peace," he stated.
Biren Singh emphasized the necessity for people to contribute doubly towards reinstating developmental momentum, aiming for unity and progress, which the state had been achieving over the past six years.
Since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, with the initiation of a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, over 160 casualties and numerous injuries have been reported. The Meiteis, constituting 53% of Manipur's population, primarily reside in the Imphal Valley, while the hill districts are home to tribal groups like Nagas and Kukis, forming 40% of the population.
Meanwhile, the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has dispatched 53 officers, including 29 women officers, of various ranks to investigate the cases related to the Manipur violence. The agency has already initiated eight cases, including two concerning the stripping and public humiliation of women by a mob on May 4. This incident had stirred significant outrage after a video surfaced on social media on July 16."
